Dental Crowns
Dental crowns can be an effective restorative solution for damaged or missing teeth.
WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN?
Dental crowns strengthen and protect compromised teeth, while bridges restore function and appearance by filling in gaps left by missing teeth. With proper care and regular dental checkups, these restorations can last for many years, enhancing both oral health and aesthetics.
A dental crown is a cap-like restoration that completely covers a damaged or decayed tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance.
WHAT TYPES OF DENTAL CROWNS ARE THERE?
Dental crowns (or tooth caps) can be placed on front tooth or back tooth.
Tooth cap vs crown? They mean the same thing.
Dental crowns can be made of a variety of materials, the most common being either porcelain or gold.
Reasons for a Dental Crown:
A tooth weakened by decay, a large filling, or a fracture may require a tooth crown to prevent further damage or breakage.
A tooth crown can restore the function and shape of a tooth that is broken, cracked, or severely worn down
After a root canal treatment, the tooth may become brittle and prone to fracture. A tooth crown protects the tooth by encasing it and providing long-term durability.
Tooth crowns are often used to anchor a dental bridge that replaces a missing tooth.
Tooth crowns can improve the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth.
Tooth crown can be placed on top of a dental implant, serving as the visible portion of the tooth replacement.
Dental Crown Procedure:
The dentist first numbs the tooth and surrounding tissue. The tooth is then shaped and reduced in size to make room for the crown.
After reshaping the tooth, the dentist takes an impression (mold) of the tooth and the surrounding teeth. This impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the crown is custom-made.
While the permanent crown is being made, a temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth.
At a second appointment, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is checked for fit and color. Once confirmed, the dentist cements the crown onto the prepared tooth.
HOW LONG DO DENTAL CROWNS LAST?
Dental crowns generally last 10-15 years with good care, though they can sometimes last longer.
Regular dental check-ups can also help maintain crowns and bridges by catching early issues that may require attention.
WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF DENTAL CROWNS?
Dental crowns aren't always the best treatment of choice. They can be quite expensive and require the removal of a fair bit of tooth structure when preparing the tooth for a crown. At Preston dental care we will only suggest crowning a tooth when it is absolutely necessary.
